A simple road sign that is often ignored or seen as annoying
is actually used for the safety and well-being of Americans. The sign covering
streets and highways, “Click it or Ticket” is not just another dumb ploy for
our police department to make more money and screw Americans over financially.
Putting on a seat belt is an action that takes up five seconds at the most of a
person’s time. Seat belts are a
necessary and preventative measure that is in our best interest to take. There
is no logical reason why a person would risk their safety and even their life
for something as illogical as not wearing a seat belt.
This sign
is a reminder that while on the road, all people are subject to accidents. All
the sign is trying to do is to preserve a person’s health or even their life. As
Americans, no one wants to see fellow American’s suffer and die from avoidable
incidents. Like the sign on the train in the Sarah Vowell piece, Americans have
the ability to stand together and unify to help each other. Regardless of what
people initially see, we are all equals living in the same world altogether.
This is something that can easily be forgotten. This seatbelt sign is used for
the best interest of fellow Americans. It is a simple reminder that choosing to
wear a seatbelt is a far better choice than wasting money on a seatbelt violation
or being the victim of an auto accident. It is safe to say that a seatbelt is
far less of a headache than either of those alternatives.
When people
say that America no longer cares about the well-being of its people, this is by
far untrue. Years ago, there were no seatbelt laws. If a person felt like being
a risk to both his life and someone else’s, that was accepted. Nowadays
Americans try to put laws on everything possible in order to protect fellow
Americans. A simple sign like the “Click it or Ticket” sign is a representation
of the care and respect we impose on each other in order to have the most
opportunity-filled lives that people can. This is a nice reminder that we are
all Americans that want what is best for each other. This is not a way to anger
the public, just a precaution that can save countless lives for years to come.
